Processes in Mixed Media

Being a mixed media artist is an exciting adventure.

In art, the phrase “mixed media” refers to an artwork that incorporates more than one medium or material in a single work.

Different ideas require different materials and combinations that are often used in a non-traditional way. Handling many materials requires constant experimentation and openness to new techniques and skill-building. Some materials, such as clay, require great commitment to process; where others, for example collage, allow a work to take final shape more simply and quickly.

Using various materials gives the artist permission to consider not only an intensity in the work but an imaginative composure not otherwise available and in turn gives one the chance to experience beauty that one couldn’t reach without this mixture. It allows the artist to stretch their imagination and make connections between materials.
